MAXJOINT® ELASTIC  is a two-component product for sealing joints in cracked concrete.

Component A is a liquid based on special synthetic resins. Component B, supplied in powder form, is a mortar based on a mixture of cements, additives and special aggregates. Mix both components to produce a high bond strength, elastomeric material.
Suitable for sealing joints and cracks in concrete, precast elements, mortars and bricks.

Applications:

  • Joints in permanent immersion in pipelines, water reservoirs, water treatment plants, etc.
  • Sealant of joints for concrete prefabricated elements and ceramic in facades and building construction
  • Sealing of active cracks in concrete and masonry.
  • Pointing mortar on substrates subject to movement.

Advantages and Benefits

  1. Allows movement capability of joint up to 15%.
  2. Excellent adhesion on damp surfaces. Must be damp
  3. Very high weather resistance and durability.
  4. No maintenance is required.
  5. NO Bonding Agent required!
  6. Non-slump on vertical joints.
  7. Suitable for joints in permanent contact with water
  8. Non-toxic and non-flammable, environmentally friendly.
  9. Easy to apply and finish. Paint, once cured, with the desired colour

Application Instructions

For sealing joints in cracked concrete the Joint Size:Joint width must not be greater than 30 mm. Sealing depth should be at least half of joint width.

Use polyethylene foam joint backing rod MAXCEL (Technical Bulletin no 48), with a diameter 25 % greater than the joint width, in order to avoid the stress of the bottom on MAXJOINT® ELASTIC.

Substrate Preparation
The surface to be sealed must be solid and clean, free of all traces of paint, efflorescence, loose particles, grease, form stripping oils, dust, gypsum plaster, etc. Before applying MAXJOINT® ELASTIC, dampen the joint edge removing free-standing water.

Mix preparation
MAXJOINT® ELASTIC is supplied as two pre-weighed components. Pour the resin, component A, into a clean container and add the powder gradually, component B, while mixing. Use a low-speed mixing drill (400 600 rpm).  Mix to achieve a lump free homogenous mixture. Avoid an excessive mixing time and do not modify the proportions supplied between both components. Leave the mix to rest for 2 minutes.

Depending on relative humidity and temperature, pot life can vary between 30 - 60 minutes approximately. After this time, re mix to keep its workability but do not add water.

Application

To improve the adhesion on the surface, a primer of component A applied by brush on the joint edge can be recommended. While the primer coat is still wet to touch, apply MAXJOINT® ELASTIC into the joint with a trowel, caulking gun or putty knife.

During the application, push against the bottom and edge joint in order to avoid any remaining internal air bubbles. Smooth the surface with soapy water immediately after application as required.

Application Conditions: -

  • Do not apply MAXJOINT® ELASTIC below 5ºC or if lower temperatures are forecast within 24 h after application.
  • NO applications onto frozen or frosted surfaces.
  • Prevent fast drying during the first hours of curing.
  • Protect against strong wind or direct sunlight at high temperatures.
  • Do not apply if rain is expected within 6 - 8 hours after application.

Curing:
Curing time varies depending on temperature and relative humidity, as well as on the joint size.

At 20ºC and 50 % R. H, a 10 mm width application of MAXJOINT® ELASTIC can be coated by MAXSEAL® FLEX (Technical Bulletin #29), MAXELASTIC® (Technical Bulletin #8)  after a curing time of 7 days.

When subject to water immersion, allow a curing time of 3 weeks, in such weather conditions.

Note Applications requiring longer curing time are

  • where expected temperatures are below 10ºC,
  • high relative humidity
  • non-ventilated areas,

Cleaning:
Clean tools with water immediately after application. Removal, once cured, is by mechanical methods.

  • Drizoro Maxjoint Elastic is recommended for sealing joints in cracked concrete. Best for your application as all the surface has to be damp to apply it!

Sure is sad to see a joint sealant like the one in the above pictures fail so completely. The pictures were taken poolside on the Gold Coast. Showing severe delamination and splitting. The is many possible causes for the failure.

  1. Wrong product selection - not suitable for conditions
  2. impossibility of keeping substrate during preparation
  3. not primed properly
  4. no bond breaker
  5. poor application technique - not following manufacturers instructions
